Deep cleaning vs regular cleaning: what's different and when you need each

A regular clean keeps a home that's already in good shape clean. A deep clean reaches the build-up a regular visit skips. Harbor Home Cleaners does both across Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties at a flat rate set before we book, and if something we cleaned isn't right, tell us within 24 hours and we'll come back and re-clean it.

If your house is basically under control and you want it to stay that way, you need a regular clean. If you can see a layer you’ve stopped noticing (dusty baseboards, a soap line in the tub, grease on the cabinet doors near the stove), you need a deep clean first. Here’s how to tell them apart and what each one means for your time and your budget.

What’s the difference between a deep clean and a regular clean?

A regular clean is maintenance. It covers what gets dirty every week: kitchen counters and the sink, the outside of appliances, bathroom fixtures and toilets, mirrors, dusting the surfaces you can reach, vacuuming and mopping floors, and emptying the bins. It assumes the home was clean recently and keeps it there.

A deep clean is a reset. It covers everything in a regular clean, then goes after the places dirt collects for months:

  • baseboards, door frames and doors
  • light switches and door handles
  • cabinet fronts and the tops of things nobody looks at
  • grout, tub edges and the build-up around faucets
  • areas behind and under furniture you can move

That list describes deep cleaning in general. See exactly what ours includes on our deep cleaning and recurring cleaning pages.

How long does a deep clean take?

Longer than a regular visit to the same home. How much longer depends on the size of the house, how long it’s been since the last professional clean, pets, kids, and how much stuff sits on the surfaces we’re cleaning.

A deep clean of a home takes longer than a regular visit to the same home.

What doesn’t change is the price. Our pricing is flat-rate: you get the number before we book, and the number you see is the number you pay. If the job runs long, that’s on us, not on your bill.

How often should you get a deep clean?

There’s no single right answer, but a deep clean usually makes sense:

  • When you move in or out. An empty home is the easiest time to reach everything.
  • After a long gap. If it’s been months since the last professional clean, a regular visit can’t catch up in one go.
  • Before starting a recurring schedule. It sets the baseline the regular visits then keep.
  • Before or after something big. Hosting family, a new baby, or the end of a renovation.
  • With the seasons. In the Lowcountry, spring pollen settles on sills and ledges and summer humidity encourages mildew in bathrooms. Many households book a deep clean when the season turns. (We cover mildew in more detail in our post on humidity and mildew.)

Once a home has had its deep clean, a regular weekly, biweekly or monthly visit keeps the build-up from coming back. That’s usually the better value over a year than booking a deep clean every time things slip.

Why does a first visit often start with a deep clean?

A regular clean is built to maintain a home, not to catch up on months of build-up. If the first visit is a regular clean in a home that needs more, either the visit runs long or things get missed. Neither is a good start.

That’s why many cleaning companies start new recurring clients with a deep clean.

Recurring clients also earn Harbor Rewards with every clean, and deep-clean upgrades are one of the perks (alongside a free oven clean, fridge clean, baseboard refresh, interior window cleaning and standard cleaning). Every completed visit earns points.

Does a deep clean cost more?

Yes. It covers more ground and takes longer, so it costs more than a regular visit to the same home. Here’s how pricing works with us:

  • Flat-rate, set before we book. Your price depends on your home and the service, not on a clock.
  • Your exact price before you book. You see it as you choose your clean online.
  • Recurring savings. Weekly cleanings are 20% off the one-time rate, biweekly 15% and monthly 10%, as long as you keep that schedule. If you cancel a recurring plan after the first cleaning, that first visit is repriced at the one-time rate and we charge the difference.
  • Fees named up front. Cancel or reschedule free with more than 72 hours’ notice. Inside 72 hours there’s a $50 fee, and if we can’t get into the home at the scheduled time, a $50 lockout fee applies. No deposit: a card on file secures your spot and is only charged after the clean.

Every fee is laid out on our pricing page.

Which one do you need?

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. When was the last professional clean? Within the last month or so: regular. Longer, or never: deep.
  2. Can you see build-up on baseboards, grout or cabinet doors? Yes: deep.
  3. Are you moving, hosting, or starting a schedule? Yes: deep first, then regular.

If you’re still not sure, call or text (843) 890-5133 and describe the house. We’ll tell you which one fits and give you a flat-rate price before anything is booked.

Whichever you choose, the 24-hour re-clean guarantee applies: if something we cleaned isn’t right, tell us within 24 hours and we’ll come back and re-clean it.

Common questions

What is the difference between a deep clean and a regular clean?

A regular clean maintains the surfaces you use every day, like counters, sinks, toilets and floors. A deep clean adds the places dirt sits for months, such as baseboards, door frames, cabinet fronts and grout, so it takes longer and usually costs more.

How often should you get a deep clean?

Most homes need a deep clean when moving in or out, after a long gap between cleanings, or before starting a recurring schedule. After that, a regular weekly, biweekly or monthly clean keeps the build-up from coming back.

Does a deep clean cost more than a regular clean?

Yes. A deep clean covers more ground and takes longer than a regular visit to the same home, so the price is higher. At Harbor Home Cleaners both are flat-rate, so you know the number before you book.
